Florida Family Vacations is my blog about travel in and around Orlando Florida. It's about the theme parks - Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and all the smaller places of interest too. It's about traveling with families and saving money! These are the notes I use to put in my travel book "The Mom's Miserly Guide:Disney, Universal, Sea World on $25 a Day!"

Universal Studios - Cheap Meal Deal!

The Most Miserly Mom loves to save money on meals at Universal Studios, Disney World or any of the theme parks!

Normally I recommend bringing a packed lunch with water and frozen juices to refresh yourself and your family throughout the day - this is the most economical way to feed the family.

However, Universal Studios does have a pretty darn good deal, or so This Miserly Mom thinks so: Universal lets you pay one price for kids or adults and you get a pass to eat all day long at various restaurants throughout the parks. The restaurants are specific, but there are plenty to choose from and the food is unlimited! The rates aren't bad, and you can choose from either a 1 park pass or a 2 park pass where you can use it at both Universal Studios AND Islands of Adventure. The 1 park meal deal pass is $19.99 for adults and $9.99 for kids. The 2 park meal deal pass is $24.99 for adults and $12.99 for kids. If you want to buy the unlimited "sipper cup" that costs $8.99 for any age.

Sea World's Happy Harbor for Kids!

The Most Miserly Mom loves what Sea World has done with its children's area! This area is calledd Happy Harbor, and Sea World has added three more rides and some safety features as well.

The Happy Harbor area has tons of things to entertain and tire out your brood - from climbing nets and jumping gyms to roller coasters for kids and rocking boat rides. Their is a baby changing area, and also much needed resting areas for parents.

After your kids enjoy themselves in Happy Harbor you can meander through the park to Shamu's show, or visit the Dolphins, or even pet the sting rays. It's truly a day full of packed fun at Sea World, and for only $65, you can visit for an entire year!!!!!!!!!! Now that's a Miserly Deal!

Car Rentals in Orlando & Disney for $12.95 a Day!

The Most Miserly Mom knows a bargain when she sees it - and a car rental in the Orlando/Disney area for $12.95 a day is definitely a good bargain!

Did you know you can get a deal like this renting through Hotwire or Expedia? You can. But what I would do if I were you is compare the rate with the actual car rental site as well - like Alamo or Dollar or Enterprise - then you will really know what the best deal is.

When you rent a car you do not need to take the company's insurance if you are covered, and most of the time your own car insurance policy or your credit card company offers coverage. Did you know that?

The Most Miserly Mom wants you to know it now! So take advantage of a bargain rental car and this way you can take advantage of the bargain restaurants and souvenir shops I recommend in my book.

Summer Travel to Disney and Orlando

The Most Miserly Mom knows that millions of people are traveling during the Summer months, and many of those wll be coming to sunny Florida to visit Orlando, Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, and the beaches. While I have thousands of travel & money saving tips in my book, I want to remind you of some travel tips to help you in the coming months.

1. If you are driving to Florida, allow extra time. Be sure to allow extra time for unexpected traffic or other factors beyond your control that could reduce your average travel speed, such as road work or poor weather conditions.

2. If at all possible leave earlier than most people and stay later as well. Avoid traveling during peak traffic times.

3. Did you know that AAA has a Fuel Price Finder? Just go to http://www.aaa.com/ to find the cheapest gas for your road trip or for the cheapest gas once you arrive in the Orlando area.

4. Always arrive early at the airports, always check your flights for delays, and try to carry on luggage if you can instead of checking it.

5. Use an online check in service if you can. You can get boarding passes and everything on many airlines these days, and not even have to stop at the ticketing counter at all!.

6. Log onto www.tsa.gov for the latest information concerning prohibited carry-on items. Recently I forgot about this, and I ended up throwing away perfume, make-up, deodorant, etc. That can be costly, and This Miserly Mom does not like that!

7. If you are traveling with your children or even for yourself, bring snacks, bring games, bring books, and most of all bring a sense of humor and your patience.

Camping at Disney World on a Budget!

The Most Miserly Mom offers tons of tips on saving money while visiting Disney, Orlando, and the other theme parks, and normally it behooves you to stay off property at a clean, economical hotel or motel and save hundreds of dollars (see past posts or buy my book).

However, if you should definitely desire to stay within the confines of the Disney World Resort Area, one of my favorite recommendations is Disney's Fort Wilderness Campground. You can actually tent there or rent a "cabin." Some of the cabins are older and some are newer, but all have bunk beds, kitchens, grills for cooking out, and plenty of space for the kids to run around. The rates vary. Camping in a tent of course is the most economical, but if you choose to rent a cabin the least expensive rate is normally about $169 plus taxes (and they definitely go up from there depending on the season). Don't immediately disregard this option, however, based on that rate, because staying in these cabins can save tons of money in other ways - specifically food!

You can eat all of your meals at your "home base." In fact, you can set up a crock pot in the morning and have a $10 meal ready to feed the whole family when you return from your day at the parks. You can't get much more economical than that!

And Fort Wilderness has a petting zoo and sing alongs and camp fires and a huge pool - and all kinds of stuff to entertain the kids for hours on end. (Just bring your own drinks so you don't have to pay the ghastly prices in the Disney vending machines!)

The Most Miserly Mom loves Fort Wilderness - and You will too if you choose it.

Disney Hotels Nonsmoking!

The Most Miserly Mom read today that Disney World plans to ban smoking in many of its hotels as of June 1st.

First they banned the trans fat for us, now they are banning the smoking.

What do you think of that?

The Most Miserly Mom, a nonsmoker, enjoys nonsmoking rooms. I like a clean-smelling hotel room without smoke. At least Disney is offering outside smoking areas in these hotels for those who do smoke. I think they should have an option.
